Striker has staked his claim for minutes ahead of Ghana group game

Ivan Toney scored a hat-trick as England played a behind-closed-doors friendly against Sporting Kansas City on Thursday.

The Three Lions got their World Cup off to a thrilling start on Wednesday as Harry Kane scored twice in a 4-2 win over Croatia.

The result sets England up to win Group L, ahead of games against Ghana and Panama next week.

England flew back from Dallas after the game, landing at their Kansas City training base in the early hours on Wednesday morning.

The players who started the opener were given a recovery day, while others took part in open training and a training ground game against Major League Soccer side Sporting KC.

Toney netted three times in a 5-1 win, with Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers adding to the tally.

Watkins and Toney did not get off the bench in Dallas, while Rogers got around 20 minutes in the second half.

Trevoh Chalobah, who has been called up late as a replacement for the injury Tino Livramento, did not play as he continues to get his fitness up with gym work.

In another part of town, England manager Thomas Tuchel swapped the dugout for the mound as the England boss threw the first pitch for the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium to perform the ceremonial act.

Captain Harry Kane and defenders Dan Burn and Djed Spence were watching their boss throw the ball to Royals manager Matt Quatraro ahead of the Major League Baseball clash with the St Louis Cardinals.
