Jack Hinshelwood has signed a new Brighton & Hove Albion contract running to June 2029.

The club said in a statement that head coach Fabian Hurzeler views the 20-year-old as a growing leader with a bright future, and hailed him as a role model for academy players.

The England under-21 international’s previous agreement, signed in 2024, was due to expire in June 2028.

He has made 70 first-team appearances, scoring nine and providing six assists across midfield roles and occasionally at full-back after joining the academy aged eight.

Hurzeler has deployed him as a No 10 in the past three matches, a run that brought 2-1 wins at Brentford and against Nottingham Forest, then Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Amex.

Hinshelwood is the fourth generation of his family to play professionally. Father Adam made 100 league appearances for Brighton from 2002-09, while late great-grandfather Wally featured for Fulham, Chelsea, Reading and Bristol City. Wally’s sons Martin and Paul played for Crystal Palace, and Martin later coached and managed Brighton and now works as an academy scout.

Martin’s son Danny also played for Brighton and Portsmouth, and Jack has appeared alongside his 17-year-old cousin Harry Howell since last season.

Brighton are 14th with three wins in their last 16 league games after Crystal Palace’s 3-1 victory at Tottenham on Thursday. Hurzeler’s side return to action at 11th-placed Sunderland on March 14.
