While the majority of FC Bayern have gone into the Christmas break, one Munich professional is making headlines at the Africa Cup. Nicolas Jackson is putting in a performance in his national jersey that is likely to be closely watched at Säbener Straße

The 24-year-old is taking part in the Africa Cup with Senegal and got off to a perfect start. The attacking player was the outstanding performer on the pitch in the 3-0 win over Botswana, deciding the game almost single-handedly with his individual class

Jackson put his team on the road to victory with the opening goal in the 24th minute. After Ismail Jakobs had increased the lead to 2-0 in the meantime, it was Jackson again who finally made things clear with his second goal. The brace underlined a performance that was also statistically impressive. Seven shots, five of them on target, plus three assists and a pass rate of 94 per cent – Jackson was a constant presence and almost unstoppable

Strong numbers in the national jersey

The attacker’s development in the Senegalese national team kit is particularly striking. Jackson has now scored seven goals in 26 international matches, six of which he has scored in the last six appearances. He has scored four times in the last two matches alone, a rate that clearly shows how much the attacking player is currently benefiting from rhythm and confidence

This form contrasts somewhat with his previous appearances at FC Bayern, where Jackson has only been able to show his potential in phases. He has often lacked a connection to the game and has also lacked the final consistency in finishing. In the Bundesliga, he has scored three goals in twelve games, while in the Champions League he has scored twice in five appearances. In total, Jackson has scored five goals in 542 minutes – a record that is solid, but not convincing enough to be considered a real alternative to Harry Kane in the long term

Africa Cup as an opportunity for Jackson

The Africa Cup could now become a turning point. Match practice, self-confidence and a central role in the team are factors that Jackson has not had consistently in a Bayern shirt so far. In Senegal, he is set, enjoys backing and can develop his game without major tactical constraints. That is precisely what seems to be visibly benefiting him at the moment

Nevertheless, the attacker’s prospects remain open for FC Bayern. The Munich club have a purchase option of €65 million, but such an amount is hardly considered realistic internally. A permanent transfer would only be conceivable if Chelsea FC made significant concessions.
