Leicester City Sporting Director James McCarron has given his first public comments since joining, outlining a plan to support new manager Russell Martin with a clear football structure.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, Martin has agreed a three-year deal at the King Power Stadium, succeeding Gary Rowett. He will lead pre-season for 2026/27 in League One after relegation from the Championship.

His appointment followed a search over several weeks, with City long admiring a style of play that brought success to Southampton.

McCarron became the club’s first-ever Sporting Director as part of a leadership restructure, and attended several late-season games before starting work this summer.

He said Martin will be backed by a structure built on alignment, accountability and high standards, and that his job is to ensure the right environment around the team.

McCarron added that the aim is to help players and staff perform at their best, strengthen culture across the football operation, and keep recruitment, development and performance aligned and consistent.

Chief Football Officer Jon Rudkin said Martin is a strong leader and clear decision-maker with a defined way of working. He added that Martin understands the responsibility and is well placed to help the club move forward with purpose and direction.
