Liverpool have rarely been afraid of making significant investments when they believe a player can shape the future of the club. Yan Diomande increasingly looks like somebody who fits that description.
The RB Leipzig winger continues to generate excitement across Europe and Liverpool’s determination to secure his signature suggests they see a special talent in the making.

An opening offer worth €100m has already been rejected, with reports indicating Liverpool are preparing to return with an improved proposal. Such figures naturally invite scrutiny, especially when attached to a 19 year old player.
Jamie Carragher believes the key is understanding precisely what Liverpool would be purchasing.
Potential rather than perfection.
Speaking on Sky Sports News, the former Liverpool defender outlined why Diomande has caught the eye.

Carragher said: “I think what you’re buying is potential. It’s not what he is right now, he’s a 19 year old kid, he’s a young man; but when you look at him physically, he looks like he has all of the attributes.
“You think of the success that Liverpool have had in the past with powerful, quick wide men. You think of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, especially those two. He certainly looks like he has those types of traits.

“That’s a big thing that Liverpool lacked last season, pace in those wide areas. They’ve already got a signing in from Spain, from Osasuna, Victor Munoz, and maybe they want a bit of pace on the other side as well.
“It’s pretty obvious where Liverpool were lacking last season, and that looks like where they’re going in the market. Is [Diomande] worth it? Time will tell.”
It is a measured verdict rather than an emotional one.
Carragher recognises both the risk and the opportunity.
Liverpool’s attack has evolved considerably over recent years, but there were moments last season when a lack of explosive speed became evident.
Elite defences have become increasingly compact. Breaking them open often requires players capable of beating opponents one on one.
Diomande excels in that area.
The Ivory Coast international recorded the second fastest sprint speed in the Bundesliga last season at an extraordinary 22.56mph. Those numbers help explain Liverpool’s interest, but speed alone is never enough.

His productivity is equally impressive.
Diomande contributed 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances during the 2025/26 campaign, demonstrating that his game already possesses end product.
Carragher’s references to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are understandable.
Neither player arrived at Liverpool as a guaranteed world superstar. They joined a well structured environment that elevated their talent to extraordinary levels.
Liverpool supporters will appreciate that comparison comes with caution rather than expectation.
Diomande still has much to prove.
However, Liverpool’s recruitment strategy has long focused on identifying players before they reach their peak rather than after.
That philosophy has delivered remarkable rewards.
The conversation now centres around value.
A fee exceeding £100m inevitably creates pressure and external scrutiny. Every performance would be analysed through the lens of that transfer figure.
Yet football’s financial landscape continues to evolve.
Players with elite athleticism, proven output and enormous developmental upside command premium prices.
Liverpool appear convinced that Diomande belongs in that category.
If he eventually produces even a fraction of what Salah and Mane delivered across their glorious Anfield careers, Liverpool’s investment would quickly become easier to justify.
For now, Carragher’s verdict offers an important reminder.
Liverpool would not be buying a finished product. They would be buying the possibility of something exceptional.
