Luuk de Jong’s future at Porto remains unresolved, with talks ongoing as his recovery and family situation shape the decision. His deal ends in June and, despite an option for a further year, staying is far from certain.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport, former Netherlands international and ex-club executive Jan van Halst said he does not expect De Jong to continue at Porto, pointing to age and the severity of his injury, and argued the club should avoid the risk of a renewal.

Van Halst felt De Jong’s move had been quickly overshadowed by the serious knee problem, adding that an anterior cruciate ligament injury at this stage of a career is very difficult to overcome. He suggested the striker might manage one, two or three more years abroad, depending on how his body responds.

De Jong, 35, is rehabbing an ACL rupture in his left knee suffered late last year, having undergone surgery in December. Away from football, a close relative is ill in the Netherlands, and he is considering a return to Eindhoven to be nearer to family.

He turns 36 in August and is still weighing up whether to extend his career. No final call has been made, and playing for a Dutch club remains possible if he leaves Porto, while for now his focus is firmly on rehabilitation.
