Jarrad Branthwaite to Manchester United may be back on, according to a reputable Red Devils news source.

Branthwaite was long considered Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s “number one” target, the player INEOS hoped to secure as their first marquee signing in the summer of 2024, following their arrival as part of United’s ownership structure.

So determined were United to bring the 23-year-old to M16 that they approached Everton to convince the Toffees to part with their prized defender.

However, Everton stood firm, rejecting United’s advances and rebuffing two separate bids from INEOS, the second worth £45 million plus £5 million in add‑ons for the Englishman.

United pivoted to other targets

With Branthwaite off the table, United turned their attention elsewhere, eventually landing Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt. Last winter, young defender Ayden Heaven also arrived to bolster the ranks.

Reinforcements still required

While that trio have proved strong additions, there remains a sense that United still need further defensive reinforcements.

The departures of Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelöf were not offset by replacements, and that decision is now biting them.

Injuries to Harry Maguire and De Ligt, coupled with Noussair Mazraoui’s absence on international duty with Morocco at AFCON, have left United desperately short of defensive numbers.

Given Ruben Amorim’s project is so heavily reliant on central defenders, INEOS cannot be excused if they fail to strengthen the backline in 2026.

Branthwaite tops the list

According to Caught Offside, it is clear which defender United will prioritise:

“One of the top targets remains Jarrad Branthwaite. The Everton defender’s Premier League experience, physical presence, and improving composure in possession make him a strong candidate for Amorim’s system.”

Injury setback

Branthwaite has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and has yet to feature this season. Even so, United’s interest has not cooled.

Should a move materialise, it would most likely happen next summer. With the defender expected to return to training in the coming days, United may use the next few months to monitor his fitness, assess whether he maintains his level, and decide if he is still the player they want.

And with Maguire likely to depart as a free agent in the summer, Branthwaite could emerge as a capable replacement at the heart of United’s defence. Featured image Gareth Copley via Getty Images
