Manchester United’s backline had no answer to Manchester City’s attack, as the visitors succumbed to a 3-0 derby defeat at the Etihad.
Luke Shaw, in particular, was the main culprit, as his lacklustre defending allowed Jérémy Doku to create a number of chances, including the cross that Phil Foden headed into United’s net for the opener.
United didn’t sign a new central defender despite releasing Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof at the end of last season. As such, Ruben Amorim has relied on Shaw, a natural left-back, to play as a wide centre-back in his 3-4-3 formation.
So far, that experiment has created more problems than it has solved, raising question marks over the club’s transfer strategy.
According to Fichajes, United were interested in signing Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton in the summer.
It is claimed the Red Devils were willing to submit an offer close to £60 million. However, Everton had no desire to part ways with their leader at the back, who also attracted interest from Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
The 6’5″ left-footed centre-back is highly rated at United, owing to his massive frame, excellent defending in wide areas, and composure with the ball at his feet.
The 23-year-old was also the subject of several unsuccessful bids from United in 2024 before the Mancunians signed Leny Yoro from Lille.
The Toffees consider him a key part of their project and remain adamant that he is not for sale. The Englishman signed a new five-year deal with the Merseyside outfit in July.
Further, Branthwaite appears to be happy at Everton, and as things stand, has no desire to push for a move away.
United’s supposed willingness to splash a considerable fee on the Everton star suggests strengthening the defence is on the agenda at Old Trafford.
As such, the arrival of a new defender in January cannot be ruled out, especially as Harry Maguire’s contract is due to expire at the end of the campaign.
Further, United are also prepared to “accelerate” the exit of Shaw, who has been a real disappointment during Amorim’s time at the helm.
