Ismaël Koné’s World Cup is over after the Canada midfielder was carried off during the Group B 6-0 win over Qatar. He was taken to hospital.

"J'ai entendu l'os craquer," said head coach Jesse Marsch, who added that Koné will need surgery, speaking to The Athletic after the match.

The Sassuolo player, formerly of Marseille, left the pitch in the 57th minute after a clash with Assim Madibo. The Qatari was sent off and later went to Canada’s dressing room to apologise. The exact nature of the injury has not been revealed.

Koné, 24, is a mainstay for Canada with 42 caps and 4 goals. He had begun the tournament strongly.

Last Friday he was named man of the match in the opening 1-1 draw with Bosnia.
