Crystal Palace manager Jo Potter has impressed the importance of her team improving fast this season if they are to stand any chance of getting promoted back to the WSL.
The Eagles sit mid table as we approach the midway point of the season and they need to start picking up results to catch up to the league leaders.
After being relegated from the WSL last season, hopes were high for Crystal Palace in the second division.
But life in WSL2 has been hard for Jo Potter’s side who sit eighth in the table after the first nine games.
Palace won their first league game since September last weekend and Potter certainly hasn’t given up on the season just yet.
“You can see what a difference it makes to the league table just by winning one game. So that’s our aim now, game after game, to keep climbing that table and keep improving on performances.”
With the WSL expanding to 14 teams from next season, the top three in WSL2 will be given a chance at promotion.
Crystal Palace are just six points behind Bristol City in third place and there is still plenty of time to catch up to the league’s leaders.
“It’s going to ignite the hunger in them a little bit more to want to be more ruthless, to want to be better and be more clinical in front of goal.
“We have spoken about that. Both ends of the pitch, we need to be a little bit better and improve.
“That’s our aim. That’s what we’re continuing to do and hopefully it transpires.”
Potter took over as Palace boss at the start of the season and she had high expectations of the team that haven’t quite been met yet.
Palace don’t have a league game this weekend but they do have a chance to build on their momentum following last week’s win.
Potter’s team face Leicester in the Subway League Cup on Sunday. The cup game is a must-win for Palace, who are already three points behind London City Lionesses in their group.
Although there is a long way to go in the season, if Palace can start stringing some results together now they will have a much better chance of getting promoted by the end of the year.
