Joao Gomes 'to join' Atletico as Wolves exit nears, echoes of 2023 choice | OneFootball

Joao Gomes’ summer exit from Wolves appears inevitable, and a fresh claim points towards Atletico as his destination as the Old Gold prepare for a testing Championship campaign.

Molineux.news reports that the midfielder is close to completing a move to Atletico after rejecting interest from Zenit Saint Petersburg, Atalanta, Galatasaray and Leeds United, with some proposals richer than Atletico’s. The Spanish club are said to be offering about £38.5 million, negotiations continue and Wolves are targeting about £40 million.

Gomes only wants Atletico, which he views as a unique opportunity. His combative style appears a strong fit under Diego Simeone.

There is a familiar ring to it. In January 2023 he chose Wolves over Lyon while at Flamengo, even though the French side offered more money.

Signed for about £15 million, he quickly became a fans’ favourite at Molineux. Although the fee may fall slightly short of Wolves’ ideal figure, after his service the club will probably help make the move happen.
