João Victor will have the chance to stake his claim with Flamengo’s first team during their Portugal camp in the World Cup break. According to Coluna Do Fla, the squad are on holiday until 19 June before regrouping for the trip.
The centre-back featured against Coritiba on Saturday, 30th, coming on after 17 minutes when Léo Ortiz suffered a thigh muscle injury. Leonardo Jardim sent on the youngster to replace the experienced number three.
A favourite of former coach Filipe Luís, João Victor will benefit from the absences of Danilo and Léo Pereira, with opportunities during the camp.
With nine players away on World Cup duty, Jardim will also draft academy youngsters to bolster first-team training in Portugal.
João Victor spent virtually all of 2025 with the senior squad and is listed as a first-team player on the club’s official website. He was available for 52 matches and made nine appearances.
He was criticised for errors against Sport and Fluminense in the league. Flamengo beat Sport 5-1, but lost 2-1 to Fluminense after his mistake for the opening goal, and he was booed and withdrawn at half-time.
The delegation departs for Portugal on 28 June. Flamengo are due to face Falkirk on three or four July, Birmingham on eight July and Benfica on 11 July, before returning on 12 July.
