Former Chelsea hero Joe Cole has come out and questioned one area on the pitch that Chelsea didn’t address this summer.

The Blues had a fairly decent summer transfer window but there was a couple of positions they ended up not addressing despite many rumours throughout the window.

One of those positions was at centre back, especially after Levi Colwill got injured. And the other position was at goalkeeper, with many Chelsea fans and pundits still unsure whether Robert Sanchez is good enough to keep goal as Chelsea’s number one going forward.

Chelsea did try to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan and actually came very close to sealing the deal to get him in. One Italian journalist this week detailed just how close that was and what happened there.

It was very controversial and risky in the end that Chelsea did not bring in a new goalkeeper or not pay the small fee required to get Maignan.

And another deal that can be described as risky or controversial was Chelsea signing Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United. However, former Blues player Florent Malouda believes the winger could actually follow in the footsteps as Cole Palmer at Chelsea and prove a few people wrong this season.

Cole says Chelsea are dark horses to win the Champions League. In words picked up on X this week, he said:

“I’d put them in a bracket just at the top of the dark horses and bottom of the teams who you might expect to be in the latter stages of the competition.

“It all depends, I think, on the performance of the goalkeeper Sanchez.

“That was the one area of the pitch, if you asked Chelsea fans where they needed to improve, that they would have gone for.”
