Joe Rodon has explained why he chose to rejoin Leeds United permanently after last season’s play-off disappointment, despite strong interest elsewhere.
At Wembley in 2023-24, Ethan Ampadu stepped out and Will Smallbone slipped in Adam Armstrong, who beat Illan Meslier for the only goal of the final. The defeat kept Leeds in the Championship and forced sales, with Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville leaving for £110m.
“There was a lot of (transfer) interest. But from where I was before I came to Leeds and how that went; loved it even though we failed. It was so important, there was no other option.” He told The Athletic.
Ipswich Town tried to lure the Wales defender after promotion, Southampton were keen, and Jose Mourinho was linked with Fenerbahce. Leeds then sealed a £10m deal after Archie Gray’s £40m switch to Tottenham. Jayden Bogle arrived, Manor Solomon joined on loan and Brenden Aaronson returned.
Rodon had excelled for Leeds in 2023-24 after limited minutes at Tottenham and a difficult 2022-23 loan at Rennes. He has maintained that level this season and, without doubt, has been Leeds’ most consistent performer.
