Joey Barton charged over alleged golf-club assault, man seriously injured | OneFootball

Joey Barton has been charged with assault after an incident near a golf club in north-west England that left a man with serious injuries. The victim is in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The 43-year-old and a second man are accused of attacking a man on Sunday near Liverpool, Merseyside Police said.

Earlier on Tuesday, a separate hearing in a libel case brought by former England forward Eni Aluko against Barton proceeded without him.

In December, Barton received a six-month suspended prison sentence for social media posts deemed gravely offensive towards broadcaster Jeremy Vine and commentators Lucy Ward and Aluko.

The former Marseille midfielder, who also represented several Premier League clubs, has previously been involved in a series of on-field and off-field altercations. In March 2025 he was found guilty of assaulting his partner during a 2021 dispute, receiving a 12-week suspended sentence.
