Southampton technical director Johannes Spors has dismissed reports from Türkiye claiming the club have already ruled out triggering their £7 million option to sign Elias Jelert from Galatasaray, insisting no decision has been made.

He said suggestions a call is already taken are wrong, adding it would be illogical to decide now with the clause open until May.

“I spoke to him in the canteen. I said: ‘Elias, when you read that, it’s b*******. Just don’t listen to it.’ I thought maybe he reads and believes that,” he told the Daily Echo.

Jelert has not featured since suffering an injury against Swansea. “He is a very good player,” Spors added. “He got injured at a bad moment because he played his best game for us and then got injured in that game.”

His absence curtailed former boss Will Still’s plans to try a four-two-three-one and has affected Tonda Eckert too.

Jelert has returned to first-team training and Saints are managing his recovery through a busy Christmas schedule. Southampton host Coventry City at St Mary’s on Saturday for another early kick-off.
