The former Blade was sent off at Bramall Lane

John Lundstram’s return to Bramall Lane was never going to pass without incident, but few would have expected it to unravel quite so completely.

Play-off chasing Hull City took a significant blow as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United, a result shaped as much by momentum swings as by individual moments.

Two late Blades goals sealed three points for the South Yorkshire side, following the sending off of Lundstram.

He walked for a second bookable offence in the 75th minute, but protested he had been impeded by referee John Brooks before the foul on Jairo Riedewald.

The midfielder - who joined Rangers from United in 2021 - was subject to a frosty reception on his return to Bramall Lane.

He took to social media after the game to share his thoughts.

Lundstram took to Instagram after the game to express his feelings to both Tigers and Blades fans.

“I never ever do this, but I’m sorry to the Hull fans today,” he wrote on a story.

“Fine margins decide games and I feel I cost us today,

“I apologise!”

His following message to Blades supporters, however, has gone down badly with his former club.

“The reception from Blades fans hurt a lot today also, I don’t understand the hostility,

“I absolutely love the club, gave everything for the club, and was part of maybe the best Sheffield United team in history,

“I left because I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to change mine and my families lives.”

Lundstram joined Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side in 2021 upon the expiry of his Blades contract.

He made 153 appearances for the Scottish giants, scoring 11 goals, before leaving for Trabzonspor on a free transfer in 2024. From there, he joined the Tigers on loan in 2025.

Sheffield United, Hull City and Rangers fans all aggrieved by John Lundstram statement

Ultimately, Lundstram’s return to Bramall Lane was always likely to be emotionally charged, but the fallout speaks to more than one difficult afternoon.

For Hull City, the timing could hardly be worse. With the margins in the play-off race tightening, a three-game winless run has raised the pressure, and moments like Saturday - a red card, a contentious penalty and a late collapse - risk defining a season.

Lundstram’s dismissal did not occur in isolation, but it became the flashpoint in a match that slipped from their control.

From a United perspective, the reaction inside Bramall Lane reflects the complicated relationship supporters often have with players who leave under a cloud.

Lundstram was a key figure in one of the club’s most memorable recent sides, but football rarely allows for neat or agreed legacies.

Even among Rangers supporters, where Lundstram enjoyed some of the strongest years of his career, there was a humorous response, with some suggesting they were owed an apology of their own.

His comments, intended as a conciliatory gesture, underline how difficult it is to navigate those overlapping loyalties in public.

In trying to address Hull supporters, acknowledge his past, and defend his decisions, Lundstram found himself caught between audiences.

At this stage of the season, nuance tends to give way to results. Hull’s focus will be on steadying their push for the top six, while United will hope this result marks a shift after a difficult run.

For Lundstram, though, Saturday serves as a reminder that some relationships with supporters are not easily resolved in 90 minutes, or in a post-match statement.
