John Terry has said he was frustrated after being overlooked for the Chelsea caretaker manager’s role, following Enzo Maresca’s exit.
Under‑21s coach Calum McFarlane was chosen as caretaker after Maresca left the club suddenly in January, following a fallout with the club’s board.
Terry, who works part-time with the Chelsea academy, admits he was frustrated at being overlooked to form part of the coaching team.
The 45-year-old has completed his UEFA Pro licence and previously worked as an assistant manager to Dean Smith at Aston Villa and Leicester City. However, McFarlane, who holds the lesser UEFA B licence, was selected given his existing full-time role at Stamford Bridge.
Former Chelsea captain Terry has previously discussed his long-term goal to become the club’s manager.
Discussing the decision, Terry told the Golf Life YouTube channel: “Not annoyed, probably more frustrated, because I was certainly part of that Under‑21s group that went over.
“So even if I didn’t take the team… Calum took the team, did really well, got a result out of the game. I feel like I should have been part of that.
“Now listen, people have got to make decisions. I love it when people make decisions and they go ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Clearly the ownership, or whoever made those decisions – the sporting directors – have gone ‘no’ not to include me, for whatever reason. I don’t know why.”
