Celtic forward Johnny Kenny has voiced his support for under-pressure Wilfried Nancy as scrutiny continues to build following a tumultuous start to life at the Hoops for the Frenchman…

The Ireland international was introduced in the first-half in last weekend’s Premier Sports League Cup final after Kelechi Iheanacho was forced off with a hamstring problem at Hampden Park. The Nigerian striker will now miss the upcoming December matches.

Kenny went on to play the majority of the contest but was unable to have any real impact on the game, as Celtic were beaten 3-1 by Stephen Robinson’s St Mirren side.

With attention now turning to tonight’s crucial Scottish Premiership outing against Dundee United and questions persisting over Nancy’s position, Kenny has moved to defend the new Celtic boss, offering public backing for his manage.

“We haven’t got the results to merit [the changes], but he’s been very good,” he said via Celtic’s official YouTube channel.

“He’s made changes, and we just need to adapt and implement them changes on the pitch and ultimately get results. I have loved it [the new system]. Every manager has different systems, you just need to get down and try and study and learn their system, and I have really enjoyed it since the new manager came in.”

“Obviously, the results are not what we wanted, but I can see it progressing over the next few weeks and getting the results we need.”

When questioned if the players are fully behind Nancy, he replied: “100 per cent, yeah. I don’t think any player in there has turned their back on the manager. It is not right as professionals. We are here to do a job, get behind everyone in this building, and we are all fully in it.”

Nancy already under severe pressure

Despite it being only his fourth game in charge of the club, you get the feeling this evening is a must-win game for Nancy. A defeat, and it may well be curtains already. Dundee United’s boss Jim Goodwin will look to follow the tactical approach that worked so well for Stephen Robinson in the Premier Sports Cup Final on Sunday.

Celtic take on Dundee United at Tannadice this evening in the first of our two ‘must win’ games in hand over Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts who are currently six points ahead of the Champions. Remarkably Celtic were still selling away tickets for this match yesterday. A sign of the time perhaps?
