Jon Stead has been appointed assistant coach at Huddersfield Town.
According to Sunderland Echo, Martin Drury was confirmed as permanent head coach after the League One season ended, with Stead set to be part of his backroom staff.
The 43-year-old had rejoined his hometown club earlier this year, working with the first team following Liam Manning’s arrival in January 2026, and will now remain under Drury.
Stead spent a short spell at Sunderland after moving from Blackburn Rovers in 2005. He made 40 appearances, scoring twice, netting first against Everton at Goodison Park in April 2006 and a second in a defeat at Southend United in August 2006.
He departed for Sheffield United in January 2007 after a loan at Derby County. His career also took in Ipswich Town, Bristol City, Notts County, Harrogate Town and two spells with Huddersfield.
An academy graduate, he made his senior debut for the Terriers in 2002 and struck 18 goals in 2003-04 to earn a move to Premier League Blackburn Rovers.
He retired in 2021 after more than 700 senior appearances and 165 goals, then served as an assistant with Hartford Athletic, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Barnsley and Bristol Rovers before returning to Huddersfield.
Lynden Gooch remains on the club’s books and could work under Stead next season if he stays this summer.
