Jon Uriarte has cleared the first electoral hurdle at Athletic, collecting the required 2070 endorsements in just two days to stand for re-election on 8 May.
According to as.com, the endorsements drive opened at 12:45 on Monday in the txoko for members, and the target was met inside 48 hours. Uriarte retained strong backing at the last elections, when he beat Aretxabaleta and Barkala.
He said this is only the first step and that now it is about building a winning, strong and united Athletic that remains faithful to its values. He also stressed that every endorsement counts and is valid.
Eight directors will accompany him for the next four years at Ibaigane, with Jon Salinas as secretary and Xabi Álvarez, Ibon Naberan, Nacho Urigüen, Roque Echániz, Jon Ruigómez, Laura Ruiz de Azua and Josetxu Urrutia as board members. There is also the possibility of further additions, including external directors.
The candidacy can continue receiving endorsements, which remain equally valid, although the public counter on the club website will stop updating. The tally will still be available to Uriarte’s team.
Any parallel bids have until 18 April at 18.00 to come forward. On Thursday 23, the Electoral Board will proclaim valid candidacies once endorsements are checked. If nobody stands against Uriarte, which appears likely in the current electoral context in Biscay, he will be proclaimed president without a plebiscite at San Mamés.
