Jordan Morris has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring strain, according to Seattle Sounders manager Brian Schmetzer, and could end up missing the team's 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign.

Morris had returned to Sounders training this week, only to remove himself on Thursday and then miss Friday's session ahead of Seattle's scheduled MLS clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps this Sunday. He's only appeared in five league games, the most recent of those coming on April 26 against Colorado.

"He's not ready to go," Schmetzer told reporters. "I'll let you know more next week, but I'm not going to risk anything. But he wants to play, he's desperate to play, he's been out for a long time. But we are going to make sure he is 100% ready to go before he steps out on the field."

Too little time to recover?

The Sounders play all three of their Club Word Cup Group B matches at Lumen Field, beginning against Botafogo (June 15), and followed by fixtures against Atletico Madrid (June 19) and Paris Saint-Germain (June 23). Schmetzer did not commit definitively to whether Morris could regain fitness in time for any or all of those group clashes.

He's not the only possible doubt. Center backs Yeimar Gómez Andrade (hamstring) and Kim Kee-hee (calf) also missed last Sunday's loss to Minnesota United.

"We've got a couple of guys -- more than one -- that really want to play in the Club World Cup, and I totally get that," Schmetzer said. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play against a European Champions League winner. I mean I get it, I totally get it.

"But what's most important is making sure that we are good for the remainder of the year, and what's really most important is that we make good decisions."

In the meantime, it's not entirely certain Sunday's MLS game will go on as scheduled. The Whitecaps have been dealing with a reported case of food poisoning within the squad following their Concacaf Champions Cup final defeat at Cruz Azul last weekend.
