José Luis Gayà has turned the delicate chip over the goalkeeper into a calling card, most recently in the win at Getafe. Superdeporte highlights that the Valencia captain has scored with that finish three times, twice for his club and once for Spain.
His first arrived for Spain against the Faroe Islands in 2019, a 4-1 victory. In the 71st minute he latched on to Marco Asensio’s pass, lifted his head and, with the outside of his left boot, sent the ball over the keeper.
Back at Mestalla on 23 October 2023, he repeated the trick in a 2-0 success over Cádiz. Gayà struck in the fourth minute, timing Amallah’s through ball and lofting over Jeremías Ledesma with a deft touch.
The latest came on Sunday at Getafe, when Ugrinic teed him up and he applied another expert chip over David Soria. The goal secured Valencia’s first victory away from home and lifted the team out of the relegation zone.
After the match, Corberán underlined the value of the strike and described the technique as unusual for a full-back. He called Gayà an example of Valencianista feeling, noting how he enjoys the good and suffers the bad, and said the defender has endured a lot in recent years.
