José Martínez has spoken for the first time about his absence from Corinthians, saying in an Instagram post that he expects to be back in Brazil by the end of this week to rejoin training.
He explained that he is awaiting a new Venezuelan passport, with delays caused by disruption to state services following an unexpected rupture in his country’s government. The passport underpins his Brazilian work visa and enables international travel to represent Corinthians.
The coaching staff and board are, he said, fully aware of each step he is taking, with frequent contact maintained and answered by him.
Corinthians are unhappy with the situation and will await his return before deciding on any punishment. A fine is considered likely after his absence from training since three January.
Because of the trip, he has missed Corinthians’ three matches in 2026, against Ponte Preta, RB Bragantino and São Paulo. He will also miss the derby with Santos on Thursday and is not expected to be named to face Velo Clube on Sunday.
