As per Voetbal International, José Mourinho just couldn’t resist taking a swipe at Orkun Kökcü in a recent interview.
The Fenerbahçe manager was asked about the former Feyenoord captain’s Benfica departure. Mourinho responded to the midfielder’s Besiktas transfer in his own unique way.
Speaking in an interview for Canal 11 in the lead-up to his side’s friendly against Benfica on Saturday, Mourinho claimed that he was still well-informed about the Portuguese transfer market. It was here he fired his first subtle jab.
“I keep a close eye on the Portuguese transfer market, but I’m aware of the reality. I don’t think Turkey is a step up for a young player with big ambitions playing in Portugal.”
Following this, the interviewer made the Kökcü connection and probed further. Addressing the new signing for Fenerbahce’s rival, Mourinho continued.
“Kökcü is returning to his own country. He’s going back home, leaving the Portuguese league early and will earn a good living here. And now he won’t have to bother Bruno Lage anymore.”
With this, Mourinho looked to reopen an old wound, and hinted at the Turkish midfielder’s public fall-out with the Benfica boss at the Club World Cup. While that saga is behind the player, perhaps we will see sparks fly when Fener and Besiktas meet this season.
