Walsall have appointed Lee Grant as the club’s new head coach on a three-year deal, according to ExpressAndStar.com.

The 43-year-old replaces Mat Sadler, who left in March after two and a half years in charge.

The former goalkeeper made over 500 senior appearances for Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley and Stoke City. He played 35 Premier League games for Stoke, then ended his career at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

Grant played twice for United, debuting in the EFL Cup against Derby in September 2018. He then started a 2-1 Europa League defeat at Astana in November 2019, before retiring in 2022 after a 22-year career.

He quickly completed his UEFA Pro Licence and joined Ipswich Town as first team coach under Kieran McKenna. Ipswich went 19 matches unbeaten to clinch automatic promotion in 2022/23, then went up again to end a 22-year wait for the Premier League.

Grant moved into management with Huddersfield last summer after their drop to League One. They won four of their first five league games with four clean sheets, but only four victories in the next 15 left them short of automatic promotion.
