José Mourinho, Benfica head coach, has been given a one-match suspension and a further 11-day ban by the Portuguese federation’s disciplinary board, plus fines totalling 5,355 euros, after his dismissal and subsequent incidents in the 2-2 draw with Porto.
According to Glorioso 1904, disciplinary rules mean the penalties cannot be served at the same time, and although the regulations do not fully clarify such cases, usual practice lets the punished party choose the order.
Mourinho is expected to serve the match ban this Saturday at Arouca, then begin the 11-day sanction on Sunday, which would also keep him off the bench for the next game against Vitória de Guimarães at the Luz.
The referee’s report stated that he deliberately left his technical area in a provocative manner, ran towards the opposition bench and kicked a ball towards the stand.
The 11-day punishment, which carries a 3,825-euro fine, relates to an episode involving Lucho González, with the league delegate reporting that Mourinho made a finger gesture tapping his index finger on his thumb and repeatedly said he was small, leading to an altercation as several people intervened.
