According to Glorioso 1904, while José Mourinho remains in Benfica’s plans for next season, progress on renewing his contract is not expected any time soon.
The coach has, on more than one occasion, signalled a desire to extend his stay, but the decision is currently on hold.
The board, led by Rui Costa, sees no urgency in that dossier, with any move likely to be pushed to a later stage, possibly only after the end of the current campaign.
In the meantime, Mourinho is involved in shaping the squad’s future, working with the hierarchy and holding meetings with Rui Costa and Mário Branco to discuss reinforcement strategies.
Uncertainties remain, notably whether the club qualify for the Champions League, which could influence key calls on arrivals and departures. Even so, Mourinho has indicated which areas need strengthening and the players he may not keep.
Some of his more critical comments about the squad have not gone unnoticed internally, creating a degree of discomfort, though the board’s priority is to build a stronger team and revisit the renewal later.
