Speaking on the eve of Bayern Munich's Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash with Real Madrid, Joshua Kimmich shared his excitement for what he considers a showdown between the two biggest clubs on the planet.
“It’s something special to play against Real. Bayern and Real are the biggest clubs in the world,” Kimmich said at a press conference.
“Our coach doesn’t make much distinction between games. But we all feel that a quarter-final against Real is a very special match – you really look forward to it.
"I came here once as a kid and visited the stadium, even though there wasn’t a game. Even then, I could see how massive it is. That’s not something you experience every day. You train for moments like this every day. I hope we deliver a good performance tomorrow.”
Bayern have struggled against Real in recent years, going winless in their last eight Champions League games against Spanish capital club. Kimmich is determined to change that.
“We’ve been knocked out here every time in recent years, but the circumstances were always different. Often the second leg was here. Tomorrow probably won’t decide everything yet – we’re really looking forward to the match.”
On Real’s style of play and how Bayern plan to respond, Kimmich explained:
“In every game, we want to impose our style on the match. Real are unique in how they play – they can create danger from any situation. It will be crucial to bring our strengths onto the pitch. Of course, we’ll adapt slightly to Real, but we want to play our own game.”
