Kostas Tsimikas: Exit on the Cards as Leeds Circle Ahead of Premier League Return

Kostas Tsimikas, affectionately dubbed the “Greek Scouser” by many Liverpool fans, appears to be edging closer to the Anfield exit this summer. As Arne Slot begins to shape his squad for the upcoming season, the 29-year-old full-back may find himself surplus to requirements—especially with reported interest from newly-promoted Leeds United.

According to Lewis Steele of The Daily Mail, Leeds are “considering a move for Kostas Tsimikas this summer after their promotion to the Premier League.” With their current left-back Junior Firpo heavily linked with a move to Real Betis, Daniel Farke’s men are on the hunt for top-flight experience—and Tsimikas fits the profile.

Despite signing a contract extension that runs until 2027, Tsimikas has struggled to cement a first-team spot under Slot. He managed just eight starts in 17 Premier League appearances this past season, often playing second fiddle to Andy Robertson.

Slot’s Summer Shake-Up Already Underway

Slot’s first season at Liverpool has ended in spectacular fashion, lifting the Premier League trophy in May 2025. But despite the glory, he’s wasting no time in refreshing the squad.

“Tsimikas is likely to be available this summer with Liverpool targeting a new left back,” Steele reported. This aligns with strong rumours of Liverpool eyeing Milos Kerkez, the Hungarian left-back from Bournemouth. A move for Kerkez, however, would only materialise if either Robertson or Tsimikas is sold—an indicator that change is coming at left-back.

This isn’t just about Tsimikas. Several fringe players, including Caoimhin Kelleher and Darwin Núñez, are linked with moves away. Kelleher, in particular, has made it clear he wants to be a No.1 elsewhere, with the Republic of Ireland boss even urging him to depart Anfield in search of regular football.

Leeds United’s Interest Makes Strategic Sense

Leeds United, having stormed back into the Premier League after winning the Championship, are being proactive in the market. Steele writes: “It is widely anticipated that Leeds’ current left back Junior Firpo will join Real Betis…” – leaving a gaping hole on the left side of defence.

In Tsimikas, Leeds would gain a seasoned Premier League performer who also boasts Champions League experience. His attacking instincts and work ethic could suit Farke’s pressing style perfectly. Tsimikas has also became a fan-favourite since his £12million move to Liverpool, known for his charisma and camaraderie—something Leeds will value in their dressing room during a crucial return season.

A Career at a Crossroads

For Tsimikas, this move could be the right opportunity at the right time. With game time limited and competition high at Liverpool, a transfer might offer the chance to become a regular starter once again. He remains a quality player, and at 29, he still has several good years ahead.

There’s no indication that Liverpool are actively pushing him out, but the writing seems to be on the wall. With a contract until 2027, any deal would likely require Leeds to pay a respectable fee—though not necessarily a huge one given his limited minutes last season.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

This news evokes mixed emotions. On one hand, Tsimikas has always been more than just a backup left-back. He’s been a team player, a morale booster, and someone who steps up when called upon. Fans will fondly remember his contributions, not least his winning penalty in the 2022 FA Cup Final.

However, football is evolving under Arne Slot. With a title-winning campaign under his belt already, it’s clear the Dutchman won’t rest on sentimentality. If bringing in a younger, dynamic option like Kerkez is part of the plan, then unfortunately, that means room must be made—and Tsimikas is the logical choice.

For Tsimikas himself, Leeds could be an ideal landing spot. They’re a historic club, back in the big time, and they’ll need leaders and experience. It would be a shame to see him go, but few fans would begrudge him the chance to play regular football again.

Slot is building for sustained success. Tough decisions will come, and this one—if it materialises—may well be the first of several in what looks to be a busy summer.
