On Media Matters for Anfield Index, Dave Davis opened the discussion with David Lynch by setting the tone around Liverpool, Arne Slot and the search for a new head coach. Davis said, “Everyone’s leaving at the moment, aren’t they?” before adding that “it’d be nice if some arrivals could come through the door.”
Lynch’s response made clear how quickly Liverpool appear to be moving after Slot’s departure. “Things seem to be moving really quickly behind the scenes,” he said, adding that Liverpool “want to get something wrapped up as soon as they can, really, in terms of their management.”
On timing, Lynch was unusually direct. “You’d almost be surprised if there wasn’t an appointment confirmed this week,” he said. He also described the situation as “absolutely crazy” and said the week had “the potential to be even madder than last summer.”
The key focus of the Anfield Index podcast was Andoni Iraola and whether he is now set to replace Arne Slot at Liverpool. Lynch said that, if Luis Enrique had been available, “Liverpool will be all over it.” But he added, “It doesn’t seem that way.”
That brought the conversation firmly to Iraola. Lynch said, “I think that brings you to Iriola and I think at this point he is the clear front runner.” He added that “Liverpool are in talks and moving towards that” and concluded, “you’d be surprised if it’s not Iraola.”
Davis then referenced the wider picture, including Richard Hughes, Iraola’s agent connections and earlier conversations. Lynch replied, “I don’t think they’re going to be going to Iraola now and being caught out by what he wants or anything like that.” He also said, “I’m pretty sure those conversations have been running on for a while.”
Most significantly, Lynch pointed to Iraola’s conduct around other interest. “He held them off for a long time,” Lynch said. “He clearly knew this was a possibility and that was something that had been discussed behind the scenes.”
The expectation of an imminent Liverpool announcement was also discussed directly. Lynch said, “Liverpool, the indication I’ve got is they want to get it done before the World Cup.”
He then went further on what he personally expects, saying, “I personally would be surprised if we’re not at a press conference this week.” For Liverpool supporters waiting for clarity after Arne Slot, that was the headline line from the podcast.
Lynch also explained why speed matters, saying Liverpool have “work to do in terms of putting together backroom staff.” His view was that “the quicker you get Iraola appointed, the quicker you can move on all those sorts of things as well.”

Davis highlighted Iraola’s preference for “chaos over organisation,” and Lynch said that sounded “a bit more kind of the Jurgen Klopp school of thinking” than Arne Slot’s approach.
For Liverpool, that matters. Lynch said Bournemouth under Iraola “have been such a joy to watch” and added, “one thing you can absolutely say you don’t have to be worried about is the style of play.”
There were caveats. Lynch said Bournemouth “have had a fairly awful injury record under Iriola” and linked that concern to “the intensity of the football that they play.” He also stressed Liverpool must support him properly, saying, “You can’t just give him random players and expect it to work.”
Still, the overall tone from David Lynch to Dave Davis on Anfield Index was clear, Andoni Iraola is the front runner, Liverpool want speed, and Arne Slot’s replacement could be confirmed very soon.
