Manchester United Left-Back Search Points to Carlos Augusto and Oliver Scarles

Manchester United are doing what smart clubs should do in this phase of the market, scanning options before committing, and the names surfacing tell you plenty about the brief. As first reported by Ben Jacobs, United have looked at Inter Milan defender Carlos Augusto and also assessed West Ham’s Oliver Scarles as they shape plans for the left side.

The key detail here is timing and intent. United’s approach for Augusto was an enquiry made in April, not a fresh push, and that matters. It suggests groundwork rather than acceleration. Jacobs said, “I’ve heard that Manchester United made an enquiry actually in April for Carlos Augusto,” before adding, “He is capable of playing in left midfield or at left-back. They have assessed some young names like Oliver Scarles at West Ham as a full-back option, who is relatively versatile.

“But the main priority will be trying to find somebody who is a starter and is more of a specialist on that left-hand side.”

Carlos Augusto Brings Experience and Flexibility

Augusto looks like the safer profile. At 27, with 100 league appearances for Inter and two Serie A titles, he offers reliability, tactical intelligence and the kind of versatility managers value across a long season. He can fill in at left-back, left midfield and even across the back line. That said, versatility should be a bonus, not the reason you sign him. United need a proper first-choice solution on the left, not another patch.

Oliver Scarles Fits Development Model

Scarles is the younger, lower-cost alternative, and there is logic to that too. He can play left-back, wing-back or further forward, and at 20 there is room to develop. West Ham’s relegation may make his situation more fluid, but raw potential and immediate readiness are two different things. United cannot afford to confuse one for the other.

Transfer Priority Shapes Next Move

The bigger issue is squad planning. United are currently focusing on midfield, with one more addition wanted as Manuel Ugarte faces a lengthy absence. They also want a left winger and another forward. In other words, the left-back search is real, but it is part of a wider balancing act. If they return to Augusto, it will be because they want certainty. If they move for Scarles, it will be because they believe coaching can close the gap quickly.

Our View

From a hopeful Manchester United fan’s perspective, this report is encouraging for one simple reason, the club finally seems to be identifying profiles with some logic behind them. The left side has needed proper attention for far too long, and hearing that the main priority is a genuine starter who specialises there is exactly what supporters should want.

Augusto makes sense. He has played at a high level, he knows how to win, and he sounds like the sort of player who would raise the floor of the team immediately. United have had too many seasons built on makeshift answers and players asked to do jobs that are adjacent to their best role. If the club wants stability, experience matters.

Scarles is interesting too, particularly if the recruitment team sees him as a player who can grow into something important. Fans are usually open to signing young talent, especially when there is versatility and upside. The concern, naturally, is whether United would be asking a young player to solve a senior problem too early.

Overall, this feels like a sensible update rather than empty noise. The midfield need is obvious, the attack still needs depth, and left-back remains a weak point. If United can come out of this window with a proper starter at left-back and avoid another season of improvisation, supporters will feel the squad is at least moving in a more coherent direction.
