Juan Sartori posted an emotional message after Sunderland clinched a historic Europa League place.

Régis Le Bris’ side beat Chelsea at the Stadium of Light to secure European football. They finished seventh in the Premier League, a year after promotion through the Championship play-offs.

Sartori, a significant figure in the ownership alongside Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, shared a family photograph on the pitch after full-time. He said in a post that it was one of the best moments of his life and that Sunderland are in the Europa League.

Players, staff, supporters and members of the ownership group joined jubilant scenes as the scale of the achievement sank in.

Sunderland were in League One as recently as 2022, then won promotion, returned to the Premier League and have now reached Europe in their first season back in the top flight.

The club ended a 53-year wait for continental competition, their first European qualification since 1973-74. The finish also marked only their fifth top-flight top-10 in 70 years.

For Louis-Dreyfus and the wider ownership, last summer’s heavy backing has been rewarded with one of the Premier League era’s most unexpected European qualifications.
