Jules Koundé says he is saddened by the plight of former club Bordeaux as France prepare for the 2026 World Cup last 16.
Speaking in Waltham, near Boston, two days before the tie with Paraguay at 23:00, the 27-year-old addressed the decision. According to L'Équipe, the DNCG excluded Bordeaux from next season's national competitions on Tuesday because of a lack of liquidity.
He called it a very sad situation, saying a great club is continuing to sink amid financial problems and cannot bring joy to its supporters. Koundé added that Bordeaux fans are numerous across the world.
The right-back began his professional career at Bordeaux in 2018 and made 70 appearances for the club.
Bordeaux intend to appeal the decision within the regulatory timeframe in order to finalise financing for next season.
They have missed a sporting return to the Third Division in the past two seasons, and were sportingly qualified for next season's National 1, the new name for the fourth division.
