Real Madrid hosted this season’s second edition of the Madrid derby as the spoils were shared between the two sides in a 1-1 draw.
Atlético Madrid broke the deadlock around the half-hour mark as they were awarded a controversial penalty as Aurélien Tchouaméni stood on the foot of Saumel Lino in the penalty area.
The man who converted the penalty, Julian Álvarez, was awarded Man of the Match, and gave his reaction following the full-time whistle.
As per COPE, Álvarez reacted to the penalty call, saying, “On the pitch I didn’t see the penalty well, just an image, and the referee decided that it was a penalty.“
Atlético were, however, unable to make their first-half advantage count, and could only manage a draw come full time.
On the final result, Álvarez said, “We’re left with a bitter taste in our mouths. We wanted to win and be at the top of the table, but the draw keeps us in the running.”
Attention now turns to Barcelona tomorrow, as they can close the gap on both Madrid clubs with a win against Sevilla tomorrow.
