Barcelona are trying to sign Julian Alvarez to replace Robert Lewandowski, who is leaving the club this summer. They have already submitted an opening offer in the region of €100m, although it was not successful.
The ongoing speculation surrounding Alvarez did not go down well at Atleti, who hit back at Barcelona on social media last week. Stand-in president Rafa Yuste delivered a gracious response to the matter on Friday, but it’s safe to say that negotiations between the two clubs will not be very courteous when they resume after the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
Barcelona are not the only ones to have been less-than-impressed with Atleti’s conduct over the last couple of weeks, with ESPN (via MD) reporting that Alvarez himself is said to be unhappy at the way his current club has acted.
Alvarez’s main gripe stems from Atleti’s decision not to answer the aforementioned opening offer from Barcelona. He was very keen to have his future resolved prior to the World Cup starting, but given the stance that Los Colchoneros have taken, he has accepted that the situation will rumble on until later in the summer.

It has been reported in recent weeks that Alvarez has asked to leave Atleti this summer, and that Barcelona would be his preferred destination. Those circumstances play into the Catalans’ favour, but given how Los Colchoneros have approached the situation, that may not be enough for a deal to be done.
For now, Barcelona will have the chance to regroup whilst Alvarez is in action in North America. They may need to change their approach in order to land his signature, otherwise the alternative would be to consider other options in their efforts to sign a star-studded Lewandowski replacement for Hansi Flick’s squad.
