Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has confirmed that Julian Weigl is in Saudi Arabia to finalise his departure from the Bundesliga club.
Speaking to Sky Germany, Virkus said: “Julian Weigl is a deserving player. I can confirm that he is in Saudi Arabia. We’re on the right track. It’s about a sale, not a loan. The window over there is open longer.”
Weigl (29) is yet to feature for Gladbach this season with the player’s future up in the air. It was reported on Thursday that despite training, the defensive-midfielder would not feature in Gerardo Seoane’s plans unless he committed to the club. Saudi clubs have until September 10 to finalise their deals, plenty of time to engineer a move for Weigl.
Both Al-Shabab and Al-Qadisiyah were in discussions to sign Weigl, but it’s not known whom Weigl is with while in Saudi Arabia. Should a transfer happen – which is increasingly likely – then die Fohlen hope to receive between €10m and €15m for Weigl, although Al-Shabab would rather sign the German midfielder on loan, which Gladbach have no intention of doing.
