After winning the Premier League title but narrowly missing out on the Champions League, it’s clear Arsenal are not going to stand still this summer, with Julian Alvarez among their big-name targets.

However, the Atletico Madrid striker is ridiculously overpriced considering he scored only eight goals in La Liga this season.

Perhaps this just shows how difficult a market it is for top strikers right now, but BBC Sport claim that Alvarez is likely to cost as much as £120m this summer.

Arsenal have other players on their list as well, and this crazily over-inflated fee surely means they need to look at other options.

Julian Alvarez looks tempting for Arsenal, but his numbers don’t justify £120m transfer fee

Alvarez has shown moments of real quality during his time with Atletico, and he also previously looked impressive as a squad player during his time at Manchester City.

The Argentina international managed 36 goals in 103 appearances in two seasons at the Etihad Stadium – not bad considering many of those appearances will have come from the bench due to being behind Erling Haaland in the pecking order.

Still, despite 29 goals in his first season in Madrid, he managed just 20 in all competitions in the campaign just gone…

This just doesn’t look like enough for a player who’d be Arsenal’s record signing, with Viktor Gyokeres managing more goals this season despite most fans likely viewing his debut campaign as pretty mixed.

What should Arsenal do about their striker problem?

Arsenal are clearly far from being in crisis mode right now after winning the title and reaching two cup finals, but there have very clearly been points this season when they’ve lacked something in attack.

Against PSG in the Champions League final, they didn’t have enough of the ball or create enough chances when they did have it, while in other games they dominated possession but lacked quality in the final third.

Alvarez could be a good solution if he can improve on this season’s numbers, but Mikel Arteta might also be tempted to give Gyokeres another season, while it would also help if Kai Havertz could stay fit more often.
