Andreas Christensen was one of Barcelona’s many absentees during the club’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid this past weekend.

It was reported that the Dane missed the game due to illness and even though he was ready to fly with the team to Madrid, Hansi Flick opted for precaution.

Reports earlier today even indicated that Christensen is ready to return to the squad vs Elche this weekend.

However, according to the latest report from RAC1, it appears Christensen was actually injured this weekend, which prompted him to miss the Real Madrid game.

The report adds that the Dane has not fully recovered yet, and contrary to recent reports, he remains a pretty big doubt heading into the Elche game this weekend.

This could be a massive blow for Barcelona, who have a midweek game against Club Brugge to think about.

Rotating the defence, therefore, could have been key for coach Hansi Flick, who has simply struggled to find the right balance at the back this season.

Christensen, to that end, had actually emerged as a stable performer for Barcelona and was a decent rotation option for the club before his injury ahead of the Real Madrid clash.

Christensen’s calm presence and experience at the back might be just what Barcelona would require right now as they look to bounce back and get their La Liga campaign back on track.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see how the defender’s fitness progresses in the coming weeks and whether or not he makes it in time to make the squad vs Elche.

Even if he does return to the squad, though, Flick is likely to take precaution once again.
