Juventus were aware of the fact that Douglas Luiz was unhappy well before he said it publicly. The Bianconeri tried to work with him to find a destination in January, but nothing he liked materialized.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, it wouldn’t have been an easy sale as the Old Lady needs to pocket at least €45M to avoid a loss, considering how much he was valued at when he joined. The only team that tabled a serious inquiry was Nottingham Forest.
Douglas Luiz didn’t provide an opening to such a destination, even though the Tricky Trees are firmly in contention to qualify for the Champions League. Despite the situation, he’s fine in Turin. He’d leave only for another top team.
The midfielder was eyeing in particular the Manchester duo. However, the Citizens preferred signing Nico Gonzalez from Porto, while Casemiro stayed put, so the Red Devils didn’t need another man.
The Bianconeri will try again in the summer. Factoring in his €5M wages, there aren’t many viable destinations, Calciomercato informs. The Old Lady will try to include him in a long-shot swap to lure Sandro Tonali. Newcastle United could be keen regardless, and Chelsea might be in the mix too.
It’s hard to imagine the deal could have gone any worse, and they’ll have to pull one out of the hat to avoid a bloodbath. Unless he somehow wins over their current or next coach, he might be destined for a series of loans until his financial valuation decreases enough to make his permanent departure feasible. Inserting him in a trade, for another midfielder or preferably a striker, would be the best-case scenario.
