Forward had been tipped to return for north London derby

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz has suffered a “minor relapse” in his recovery from knee surgery, according to Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann.

Havertz has been limited to one appearance for Arsenal this season after he suffered a knee injury in an opening-day win over Manchester United.

He underwent surgery in August and initial forecasts predicted he would return in a matter of weeks, but he remains sidelined three months later.

His omission from Germany’s squad for the November international break was no surprise, then, but Nagelsmann has since issued a joint update on his and Jamal Musiala’s conditions.

Bayern Munich’s Musiala suffered a broken fibula and ligament damage after colliding with Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Club World Cup and has not played since.

“Kai (Havertz) had a minor relapse, but overall he’s doing well,” Nagelsmann said, speaking after Die Mannschaft’s 6-0 rout of Slovakia.

“Jamal no longer has any major problems. But like Kai, he first needs to get back into rhythm with his club.”

Both players are expected to return to action “towards the end of the year.”

“They have until March to get fully fit, but they obviously need to stabilise now.”

Speaking in October, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta described Havertz’s injury as “very difficult”.

“There is still a lot to do in his rehab. He wants to break every timeline, I am sure, but as well we have to protect him.”

He later added, though, that Havertz could return after the November international break. The Spaniard is expected to give an update on the player’s condition when he speaks ahead of the north London derby this week.
