Arsenal Hold Bayer Leverkusen with Late Havertz Penalty in Champions League

Arsenal left Germany with their Champions League ambitions firmly intact after a dramatic late equaliser secured a 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena. Kai Havertz, returning to familiar surroundings, converted a penalty in the 89th minute to cancel out Robert Andrich’s second half opener and ensure the tie remains finely balanced ahead of the return leg in London.

For long stretches Bayer Leverkusen looked poised to inflict Arsenal’s first defeat of the competition this season. Yet Mikel Arteta’s side demonstrated composure in adversity, finding a crucial goal that shifts the psychological momentum before next week’s decisive encounter.

Early Pressure from Arsenal

Arsenal began with purpose, circulating the ball quickly and attempting to impose their rhythm on Bayer Leverkusen. Mikel Arteta rotated heavily after the FA Cup victory over Mansfield, making ten changes to the side, yet the visitors initially looked sharp.

Gabriel Martinelli came closest to breaking the deadlock. The Brazilian, who has been prolific in Europe this season, was picked out by Viktor Gyokeres and unleashed a fierce effort that rattled the crossbar.

Despite that early warning, Bayer Leverkusen remained composed defensively. The midfield partnership of Aleix Garcia and Exequiel Palacios managed possession intelligently and disrupted Arsenal’s attacking structure whenever the visitors threatened to build sustained pressure.

Leverkusen Strike After Half Time

The game turned within moments of the restart. Bayer Leverkusen emerged from the interval with renewed energy and quickly forced Arsenal onto the back foot.

A well crafted attacking move from the kick off almost produced an immediate breakthrough, Martin Terrier’s header requiring a sharp save from David Raya. Arsenal could not escape the pressure that followed.

From the resulting Alex Grimaldo corner, Robert Andrich was left unmarked at the far post and powered a header into the net. It marked the first time Arsenal had conceded in this season’s Champions League campaign and lifted the BayArena crowd.

Leverkusen grew in confidence after taking the lead. Christian Kofane proved a persistent problem for Gabriel at centre back, while Arsenal struggled to generate clear opportunities.

Havertz Delivers Late Equaliser

Arteta responded by introducing Noni Madueke and Kai Havertz from the bench, a decision that ultimately shaped the closing stages.

Madueke’s direct running injected urgency into Arsenal’s attack. In the 89th minute he surged into the Bayer Leverkusen penalty area before being brought down by Malik Tillman, prompting the referee to point to the spot despite protests from the home supporters.

Havertz stepped forward and calmly placed the penalty beyond Janis Blaswich. The German forward, who spent a decade developing at Bayer Leverkusen before his move to Chelsea in 2020, kept his celebration subdued after scoring against his former club.

The 1-1 result means Arsenal lose their perfect record in the Champions League this season. Yet they return to the Emirates Stadium in a strong position.

History also offers encouragement. When Arsenal last faced Bayer Leverkusen in the competition during the 2001-02 group stage, a 1-1 draw in Germany preceded a commanding 4-1 victory in London.

With four trophies still within reach this season, the pressure on Arsenal continues to grow. On this evidence, their capacity to respond under pressure may yet prove decisive.
