Kai Rooney leads Manchester United academy to back-to-back National Cups | OneFootball

It was a week of Premier League finals for Manchester United’s academy.

While most noticeably United’s u21s suffered heart breaking defeat in the Premier League 2 semi-final to Manchester City, United’s younger age groups fared better.

United’s u15s raised the cup with a 3-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League Floodlit Cup national final.

There were some familiar names in the United squad including that of Kai Rooney, the son of United legend Wayne Rooney and his son looks to be following in his footsteps as a goalscorer.

Kai found the net twice in the win and set up the third goal for Jodie Nganga, who United signed from Liverpool.

Kai also provided the winner in the Floodlit Cup North final to book United’s place in the national final with Chelsea.

Trailing 0-3 to City in the North final, United embarked on a heroic comeback capped off by Kai’s extra time winner against his former club to win 4-3.

The talented group, which also contains the sons of Michael Carrick and Robert Earnshaw, Jacey Carrick and Silva Mexes, are no strangers to silverware, having won the u14s Premier League Albert Phelan Super Cup the year before.

They weren’t the only group to raise a cup in the last week either, as the current u14s defeated Manchester City in the final of the Premier League International Cup 2-0. This was sweet revenge after City defeated them in the final the year prior.

On the route to the final, United dispatched German outfit RB Leipzig, Fulham, Norwich, and Chelsea.

Further down, United’s u13s also qualified for the national final but fell to a narrow 2-4 loss to Arsenal.

While titles at academy level is not the most important objective, winning them shows the level of talent coming through United’s academy and may just lead to some familiar names back in the first team.
