Kalvin Phillips is keen to extend his Sheffield United loan into next season, with both parties open to another year together, The Star reports.
The 30-year-old joined on deadline day in January, dropping into the Championship from Manchester City after unsuccessful loans at West Ham and Ipswich Town.
He impressed early on but has not featured since 22 February, when a straight red in the Steel City derby at Sheffield Wednesday was followed by a knee injury that required surgery. There remains hope of a return before season’s end.
Living closer to his Leeds-based family has been a factor, and he is not considering a European move. He will have one year left on his City contract this summer.
United are thought to be open to another loan, impressed by his attitude and humility, though only a portion of his wages would be affordable.
Phillips has been a positive influence on younger midfielders Oliver Arblaster and Sydie Peck, and any extension would likely depend on City’s willingness to compromise financially.
A return would reunite him with Patrick Bamford, his former Leeds teammate under Marcelo Bielsa. They won the 2019/20 Championship together before standout Premier League campaigns in 2020/21. Bamford arrived as a free agent in November, then earned an 18-month deal in January, and is United’s top scorer with nine goals in 23 appearances, 17 of them starts.
