Thomas Tuchel has apparently caused quite a stir at FC Bayern with a statement about Harry Kane’s transfer. According to a report, the former Bayern coach’s account did not match the internal procedures surrounding the mega-deal.
After his move to FC Bayern, Harry Kane quickly became a guaranteed source of success. This made a recent statement by former coach Thomas Tuchel all the more talked-about. After England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16, the current manager of the Three Lions said: “I’m still glad I fought to bring him to FC Bayern Munich—against some other opinions.”
According to Sport BILD, however, this statement raised some eyebrows at Säbener Straße. The report suggests that the signing of the English striker was by no means primarily due to Tuchel. Rather, officials at the German record champions had already been closely monitoring Kane well before he took office and had been preparing the transfer over the long term.
The report goes even further: According to it, Tuchel himself was initially among those who were rather cautious about a Kane transfer in the summer of 2023. The Bayern bosses, on the other hand, were said to have been determined to make the move happen and pushed the deal forward with great resolve.
According to Sport BILD, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen in particular played a decisive role. The club chief reportedly traveled to London several times to negotiate personally with Tottenham boss Daniel Levy and bring the complicated transfer to fruition. In the end, Kane moved to Munich for a transfer fee of around 100 million euros.

Tuchel and Bayern’s management are also said not to have always seen eye to eye on other personnel matters. According to the report, the 52-year-old would have liked to sign Declan Rice, Mason Mount, and Gabriel Martinelli, among others. Tuchel is also said to have been open to selling Joshua Kimmich. In all cases, however, the club bosses decided against their then-coach’s proposals.
