Kasper Schmeichel announces retirement from football | OneFootball

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from football after a shoulder injury.

The 39-year-old last played back in February when Celtic lost 2-1 at home to Hibernian before eventually going onto clinch the Premiership title. However, a shoulder injury ended his season with Schmeichel now deciding to end his playing career.

"When my contract runs out with Celtic in June, I'll stop my active football career," Schmeichel told Danish outlet TV 2 Sport.

"It is a decision made for me. I have been advised by various surgeons and experts in relation to my shoulder and they have told me not to count on coming back and playing top football. I have made a lot of thoughts, but I believe that now is the right time."

Kasper Schmeichel began his career with high expectations as the son of legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. After initially coming through the ranks at Manchester City before later going on to stand out at Leicester City where he was part of the 2015/16 Premier League title winning side as well as lifting the FA Cup with the Foxes in 2021.

Schmeichel left Leicester in 2022 after 11 seasons with the club going on to play for Nice, Anderlecht, and Celtic. Internationally, the shot-stopper made 120 appearances for the Danish national team – just nine fewer than his father – and is currently the fifth-highest appearance maker for his country.
