The Celtic goalkeeper confirmed he will be sidelined for up to a year, having suffered multiple issues in his arm, including a torn bicep and a dislocated shoulder.

Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo on Wednesday evening, Schmeichel explained that his motivation to continue playing had been driven by Denmark’s push to reach the World Cup play-offs.

Last night, the Danish international responded to his announcement by expressing gratitude to fans for their support during what he described as a difficult period.

He said: “I just wanted to get it out there as there has been so many questions. People have been nice and have asked ‘Are you alright?’

“So I think it was just good to get it out there. I have had a great reaction. I will get back to everyone, my phone has been on fire.”

Speaking on Tuesday, Kasper confirmed the extent of his injury. “It’s a torn bicep, I’ve torn the rotator cuff, disclocated the shoulder, torn the labrum – everything is gone,” he said.

“To put it into terms you’d maybe understand, it’s like an outfield player doing their ACL and their Achilles at the same time. It’s looking like 10-12 months of rehab. It’s been a strange few days.”

When questioned about how he was coping with the news, Schmeichel responded: “I was told yesterday. I don’t really know anything right now, in the sense that you don’t know how to react to this.”

“I could have potentially played my last ever football game. I have been a footballer since the day I was born. That kind of thought is devastating. It’s very, very hard to wrap my head around, at the moment.”

“I got the message yesterday that it could potentially be the end of my career because of my age. By the time I could get back fit, I could be 40 plus.”
