Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe from Women’s Super League rivals Arsenal. The defender is set to join on a pre-contract agreement.

The 30-year-old will officially become a Chelsea player on 1st July 2026, once her current Arsenal deal expires. She has signed a contract until June 2029, with an option for a further year.

The move ends an 11-year spell in north London, where McCabe became one of Arsenal’s most influential and recognisable players.

Speaking on her decision, McCabe said the timing felt right for a change.

“It’s a new chapter in my career,” she said. “This is something that I feel I’m ready for right now. I’m really excited to get going and show the Chelsea fans how ready I am to perform for the badge.”

McCabe also spoke about what it will mean to play at Stamford Bridge from next season onwards.

“I’m so looking forward to walking out at Stamford Bridge as a home player, being around the fan base and competing for trophies on all fronts,” she continued.

Her ambition for the next stage of her career was clear: “This club has been successful for so many years. I want to keep pushing and driving that, and for me, it’s about bringing that success back to Chelsea.”

The end of an Arsenal era for Katie McCabe

Born in Kilnamanagh, McCabe began her career with Raheny United in the Irish Women’s National League. She quickly made her mark, winning multiple league and cup titles between 2012 and 2015.

Her performances earned a move to Arsenal in 2015. She would go on to spend over a decade at the club.

During her time in north London, McCabe won the Women’s Super League title in 2019 and the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2025. She also lifted several domestic trophies along the way.

McCabe made 305 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, scoring 36 goals. She was named Player of the Season in both 2021 and 2023.

At international level, McCabe has been a central figure for the Republic of Ireland. She has captained her country since the age of 21 and now has over 100 caps.

She led Ireland to their first FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023. There, she scored the nation’s first-ever goal at the tournament, directly from a corner against Canada. Later that year, she became the first Irish woman to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or. She was also the first Irish footballer since Roy Keane in 2000 to make the shortlist.

McCabe is known for her versatility and leadership. She can play at left-back, wing-back, or further forward in midfield. She also brings a strong long-range threat and an aggressive attacking edge.

The transfer marks one of the most high-profile moves between two of the Women’s Super League’s biggest rivals, with McCabe swapping Arsenal red for Chelsea blue ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
