Brentford’s preparations for their Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest have been overshadowed by uncertainty surrounding Yoane Wissa. The forward has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United, and new head coach Keith Andrews has confirmed that he will not be part of the squad for Sunday’s game.
Wissa is understood to be keen on the move and has been unsettled by Brentford’s reluctance to sell. The 27-year-old has been a consistent performer for the Bees since arriving in 2021, but speculation over his future has disrupted pre-season plans.
Speaking to reporters, Andrews made it clear that Wissa’s absence is a decision taken with the team’s readiness in mind.
“I’ve made the decision that he’s not [available for selection]. It’s been a very disruptive pre-season with the interest. The message is clear, I want him in the building, I want him to be part of the first-team squad. I see that moving forward but I’m very understanding of his situation. I have a good relationship with him and that will persist. But we have to focus on the players that are ready to perform on Sunday and Yoane isn’t in that space.”

These comments underline the balancing act facing Andrews in his first months in charge, after replacing Thomas Frank, who departed for Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer.
The Wissa saga comes at a time of transition for Brentford. Andrews is shaping his squad while dealing with external pressures, including potential outgoings. His approach suggests a focus on maintaining squad harmony and ensuring that only fully committed players take the field.
Brentford supporters will be eager to see how Andrews navigates these challenges. They will also be curious about whether the situation with Wissa can be resolved in time for him to contribute to the club’s ambitions this season.
Early stability is crucial in the Premier League, especially for a side aiming to build on recent mid-table finishes. Andrews’ decision to sideline Wissa for the Forest fixture may be a sign of his willingness to make difficult calls in pursuit of performance and focus.
For now, attention turns to Sunday’s match, where Brentford will look to begin the campaign with a strong result, even without one of their key attacking players. The next few weeks will determine whether Wissa remains in West London or secures his desired move to Newcastle.
