Keith Andrews heaped praise on Fabio Carvalho after his last-gasp leveller earned Brentford a point against Chelsea — but admitted he “feels for” him due to lack of game time.

Carvalho, 23, escaped his marker Alejandro Garnacho and peeled away to stab a stoppage-time equaliser past Robert Sanchez from a long throw to earn the Bees a draw in Saturday evening’s home league meeting with Chelsea.

The draw saw Brentford climb to 12th in the Premier League in a season many had expected them to struggle given the loss of key personnel such as Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa and ex-manager Thomas Frank.

Carvalho’s goal came from a cameo in which he was introduced just a minute before injury time began. He started only three league games last season and has one start so far this term.

“You look to the bench when you need a goal,” Andrews said.

“Fabio is someone who I feel for, that he probably hasn't had as many minutes as he deserves, because his application to his craft and his dedication to his craft is pretty special.”

Andrews added: “I know he's a goalscorer, so it was nice when he popped up with that late goal, obviously.

“With Fabio, I've just asked for a little bit of patience, because I truly believe he'll be a big player for his club.”

Brentford return to action in midweek as they host Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in the League Cup third round. The Bees have already beaten Unai Emery’s side this season, triumphing 1-0 in the League before the international break.
